Indian Army Departs for 5th Edition of India-Oman Joint Military Exercise AL NAJAH


What : The Indian Army contingent departed today to participate in the 5th edition of the India-Oman Joint Military Exercise AL NAJAH.

When : The exercise is scheduled to take place from 13th to 26th September 2024 at the Rabkoot Training Area in Salalah, Oman.

History: Exercise AL NAJAH is a biennial event that began in 2015, alternating between India and Oman, with the previous edition held at Mahajan in Rajasthan.


History of India-Oman Joint Military Exercises:

  • Started in 2015: The India-Oman Joint Military Exercise AL NAJAH began in 2015 to strengthen defence ties between the two nations.

  • Strong Military Partnership: Oman is one of India’s closest military partners in the Gulf region.

  • Focus on Counter-Terrorism: The exercises help both armies work together on counter-terrorism strategies and joint military operations.

  • Boosts Defence Cooperation: These exercises foster greater military cooperation and understanding between the two countries.

  • Enhances Regional Security: Regular military interactions contribute to better defence partnerships and improved regional security.


Participants and Objectives

  • The Indian contingent, comprising 60 personnel from a Battalion of the Mechanised Infantry Regiment and other arms and services, will represent India.

  • The Royal Army of Oman will also send a contingent of 60 personnel, represented by the Frontier Force.


Any thing related to UN : The primary aim of this joint exercise is to enhance the military capabilities of both countries in counter-terrorism operations, as outlined under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise will specifically focus on operations in desert environments, simulating real-world scenarios.


Tactical Drills Key tactical operations planned for the exercise include:

  • Joint planning

  • Cordon and search operations

  • Fighting in built-up areas

  • Establishment of mobile vehicle check posts

  • Counter-drone operations

  • Room intervention, among others
